New IMS Regulations
Homeland Security releases new employer regulations for verification of immigration status
Below are a series of documents regarding the Department of Homeland Security’s announcement of new regulations specifying the responsibilities of an employer to verify the immigration status of employees.
- A Fact Sheet on the Department’s “E-Verify” system, a “re-branding” of the Department’s “Basic Pilot” program which was begun in 1997. By the end of August, this system is supposed to add a new photo screening tool allowing employers to check new hires against 14.8 million images stored in the Department’s immigration database.
- A Fact Sheet on the Department’s new policy regarding the steps an employer should take when receiving a “No-Match” letter from the Social Security Administration indicating that an employee’s name and social security number do not match SSA’s records.
- A copy of the form letter from the Department that will apparently accompany future “No-Match” letters from SSA and inform employer’s what steps they should take in response.
- An outline of the steps the Department and other federal agencies will be taking in the future to improve immigration compliance and border security, including worksite enforcement measures.
- The actual proposed rule, which I understand will be published in the Federal Register tomorrow.
